    1. I ll be departing for Peace Corps service to Malawi in six months This book gave some fascinating insights into the country culture of Malawi and Peace Corps service It made me even excited to go

    2. FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN CURRENT AFRICAN AFFAIRS, this is the book for you Another valuable addition to Peace Corps Experience literature, it was written and published only two years after the author hugged his African family and returned Not a timid soul, Michael L Buckler describes his home in Malawi, and explores several controversial topics such as the overlap of services offered by the Peace Corps and non governmental agencies, the U.S foreign aid package, American subsidies and their effec [...]

    3. I should have liked this book than I did It is about Malawi and a peace corps memoir and I am very tolerant of just about anything written that falls into those categories The author is not a good writer but a self conscious writer which made the reading ponderous There are some very interesting parts I was particularly interested in his comments about race I liked his attempts to show the cultural differences but he didn t succeed very well.

    4. Recent Peace Corps volunteer Michael Buckler wrote a deep but not unlike Paul Theroux say pessimistic view of Malawi Like other Peace Corps, Buckler learned the local language Chichewa and lived at the living standard of his community in rural Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world His account of his experiences are good fodder for anyone trying to understand the conundrums of development where economics, politics, society, ideology and psychology intersect.

    5. I could not help think that he was poorly advised from his publisher to add dialogue It ended up being painfully contrived and distracted from some great perspective he could have shared in a different format Good effort anyway from another returned peace corps writer.
