    1. Although this book has been earning 5 stars from other readers, I was not impressed The plot skipped too frequently among the characters, and from past to present The dialog seemed forced, and I could not believe that the main character, Mateo, drowned, was saved, then was arrested, and never mentioned having died While Mateo s story is sweet and sad, I could have done without the fantastic elements of the magic crystal, ghost, and anthropomorphic forest.

    2. A boy, a stray cat, an evil villain, and a ghost sounds like a pretty straight forward plot, right But be prepared for a tale of many complex layers that will speak to young adult and adult readers alike The book moves back and forth across the years weaving multiple story lines together into a surprising finish that will leave you feeling satisfied Along the way, there is ample comic relief and suspense In addition to the well developed human characters that inhabit the little village of Palo V [...]

    3. What a wonderful read Fontanez s first foray into the world of full length young adult fiction is a striking achievement The Illuminated Forest transports the reader into Fontanez s world of Palo Verde where a feisty and compassionate young boy named Mateo must take the perilous road of whether or not to choose anger over losing a beloved family member, or love The characters who inhabit Palo Verde are richly drawn, as are the animals, who inevitably end up stealing the show which is fine, becau [...]

    4. Edwin Fontanez has written a remarkable book with beautiful illustrations It is the story of Mateo, a 12 year old boy who has returned to the island home of his grandparents after a devastating loss He is bitter, confused and trying to find peace when he encounters a stray cat having a hard time as well Perhaps they can find peace together The vivid descriptions of the island will make you feel like you are walking through the gardens and forest yourself You can almost smell the orange blossoms [...]

    5. I really enjoyed this book It is a great summer read because it is a page turner with lots of adventure and humor but it also touches on deeper themes like grief, animal cruelty, and bullying The struggles the main character goes through reminded me of myself as a young teen I think many young people will relate to the feelings of alienation and struggling to deal with the realities of becoming an adult The drawings add a lot to conveying the magical atmosphere of the island where it takes place [...]

    6. Edwin Fontanez is an incredibly talent artist and writer The prose in this book is so beautiful I ve read the book than once.
