    About "Richard Avedon"

    1. Richard Avedon

By capturing American ideals of celebrity, fashion, and beauty in the 20th and early 21st centuries, Richard Avedon helped to establish photography as a contemporary art form Avedon s distinct style of portrait photography is nothing short of iconic While the portraiture of his contemporaries focused on single moments or composed formal images, his stark lighting and minimalist white backdrops drew the viewer to the intimate, emotive power of the subject s expression Between 1945 and 1965, he worked as a fashion photographer, revolutionizing the craft even as he honed his aesthetic His work appeared in magazines from Harper s Bazaar and Vogue to Life and Look Later, he moved into journalism and the art world His subjects included pop icons, models, musicians, writers, artists, workers, political activists, soldiers, Vietnam War victims, politicians, and his family Curator Paul Roth observes In an Avedon portrait, the face maps an intersection It is a place where the world outside the photograph meets the world inside the mind Richard Avedon b 1923, New York d 2004, San Antonio, Texas studied philosophy at Columbia University, New York, and served in the photography department of the U.S Merchant Marines before studying photography with Alexey Brodovitch at the New School for Social Research, New York The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, presented two solo exhibitions during his lifetime, in 1978 and 2002 Major retrospectives were mounted at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York 1994 , and at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humblebaek, Denmark 2007 traveled to Milan, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and San Francisco, through 2009.

    1. I had no idea that Richard Avedon was the photographer responsible for the iconic psychedelic Beatles poster that had hung in my step daughter s room for years Not surprising, as he has an uncanny ability to create pieces that mesmerize the viewer This title showcases One hundred and eighty nine cities and towns in all Seven hundred and fifty two people photographed The first portrait was taken on March 10, 1979, in Sweetwater, Texas The last October 28, 1984, at the State Fair of Texas The end [...]

    2. I ve seen many of Avedon s portraits from the American West, as they are his signature pieces, but seeing all of the portraits collected together was a very powerful experience So many of the portraits are seriouis and borderline dour that the collection has a slight negative tinge, but I think that this is kind of the point the West in this period of time is going through a certain amount of recession and many are going through struggles with the transition from the prosperous past to an empty [...]

    3. Very large photos maybe 12 by 18 inches of run of the mill people living the the west in the late 70s early 80s Simple portraits, great details Apparently when the photos were first shown, there was general hue and cry of outrage that those people were not the true westerners But they are and he captured them well drifters, carnies, ranchers, coal miners, farmers, teenagers, mental patients, waitresses, what have you.A really excellent book.

    4. Fantastic large format book Photographs take up most of the page with small captions explaining subjects name, profession and date taken Small sections explain the thoughts and process behind the work.

    5. I was lucky enough to see an exhibit of his photography All his prints were massive and it was startling to see them so large and up close I believe he was a fashion photographer by profession, but was commissioned to travel across America taking these portraits.

    6. One of my favorite photo books of all time It s out of print and I had to get an old copy for 90 but it was worth every penny.

    7. sold this in my shop so had several chances to page through the photographs They really capture the plainness and weirdness of ordinary people.
