    About "Adriaan Brae Rebecca Brae"

    1. Adriaan Brae Rebecca Brae

I write a mix of fantasy and science fiction with my co author and life partner Rebecca Brae We have 2 books published so far Mist Warden series and we re finishing up two stand alone books We re supposed to be working on Mist Warden book 3 but we adopted a baby instead Some of the writers that inspire me today are Lois McMaster Bujold, Sarah Zettel, Tess Sharpe These authors take on tough questions about what it means to be moral and the destiny of humanity without flinching They inspire me to be a better person, as well as a better writer. In just the past few millennia humans have moved from chipping tools out of stones to space exploration and printing replacement organs Every step on that path was driven by someone s imagination My goal as an author is to bring back a sense of optimism The dark side of our natures will always be with us but I m convinced that humanity has an amazing future ahead.

    1. Chaos Bound by Adriaan and Rebecca Brae is a young adult urban fantasy it also might be categorized as paranormal There is a science fiction element but even by the end that aspect is teaser than anything else I am calling it urban fantasy, but the magic through to the half way point is minimal However, there are mentions of many kinds of para creatures that would push the narrative out of the paranormal into fantasy, so I m on the fence between the two The story focuses on Jessica Clarke, a sm [...]

    2. Jessica Clarke is a geeky grade ten student in a small town just west of Calgary But change is in the air Her boyfriend has moved away to the big city, and her best friends have abandoned her for the cool kids in class But when some of these kids start playing around with a Ouija board, they open a gateway they shouldn t have A supportive acquaintance of hers becomes possessed by a dark force and dies, the darkness moving to another student Jessica finds herself contacted by an intelligence from [...]

    3. This was an interesting book, well written and with complex engaging characters Jessica is in 10th grade the book takes place in Canada so I think that translates to a Junior in the US Her boyfriend has moved to the city and her two girlfriends have moved on to other friends Jessica is pretty well adjusted and even though made the butt of practical jokes she handles it all pretty well What really freaks her out is the odd events happening around her and the visions she is having She makes new fr [...]

    4. When the going gets weird, the tough are useless You need a geek The premise sure caught my attention Geeky teenager acts heroic even though she has zero hero qualities Jessica is going into 10th grade, she worried about making new friends, keeping her current one, her unfashionable wardrobe, her BF moving to a new school several miles away, her absentee parents and Kirsten the classical mean girl who torments her in school I like Jessica, she s an interesting character. It s the supernatural par [...]

    5. Classic YA, filled with teen angst and is it really angst if you actually have world endangering trouble I don t think so Jessica is a strong character who starts off weak and really flourishes under pressure She is a great example to other teens in terms of responding to peer pressure, cliques, being an outsider and all things angsty Mac or Michiru is the action hero of the book and it is fascinating to see thing from her perspective Likewise, Drew, who has a lot of insight into the weirdness g [...]

    6. I m usually surprised by YA fiction Maybe I think that I should be reading complex stuff, but that just denigrates how good the YA genre can be The characters in Chaos Bound are complex and well realized The story starts with a jolt and unveils its secrets in unpredictable fashion The sci fi urban fantasy fusion is sufficiently blurred as to warrant a lengthy argument about which ultimately prevails Indeed, I read this book a second time to further explore is mysteries I hope the authors publish [...]

    7. An enjoyable YA novel with great characterization, description and dialogue I enjoyed going back to my teen years and reliving the trials and tribulations that all young adults experience, especially mixed in with the elements of urban fantasy.Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys reading YA or Urban fantasy novels.
