    2. I was horrified when I started reading Shattered Lies, as racial tensions are a big issue in South Africa currently, and I could not figure out if this story was taking place in the 60 s or now I m very glad I did not stop reading, because as it unfolded, I was hooked. It s all here the pretending of being non racial by both black and white grandmothers, the ugly lies and betrayals that only families seem to inflict on each other If it came from a stranger it would probably not be a betrayalor be [...]

    15. some spoilers Kate Thayer discovers she has been living a secret life when she happens upon her mother s diary in the attic of her grandmother, Katherine Thayer s, house One knows at this point in the novel that everything will change for this likable character and little of it for the better If I were Kate s friend I would ve stopped her from reading, knowing there are secrets better left unknown Fortunately, the author, SJ Francis, makes sure all the dirty little secrets, lies, adultery, and g [...]

    23. S.J Francis has created a racially charged story that has blown me away With one secret piling on top of another, I was left guessing from beginning to end It was refreshing to see Kate s strength and determination even while her world, or what she thought was her world, crumbled right before her eyes A wonderful debut novel leaving me excited to see what this extremely talented author will come up with next.

    24. S j Francis wrote a good book about a family in modern day Mississippi I ve been sticking to my mysteries, detective and crime fiction, some thrillers for a long time now, but enjoyed this novel I noticed right off the bat that even though this was not a mystery or thriller, the book was still brimming with twists and complications found in those other genres The ending was complete, but ends in a way that suggests a sequel may be in the works.

    27. This book hooked me from the first chapter To imagine that racial tension between whites and blacks marring in the 1980 s really surprised me The way both families treated the son and daughter who wanted to marry and then the the twin children later is appalling Maybe it is because it happened in the south it was frowned upon The author used brutal honesty in portraying the characters in this novel It read like it could have happened yesterday with the racial divide we are experiencing these da [...]

    29. Family Secrets Family LiesWe have all known the Imperial Woman type the one who makes the world comply to her view Mix that woman with tragedy and you have the basis of this story I became totally involved in this story immediately There is not a hair out of place with the plot, depth of character, real emotion or believability in this entire book While this is a long book, it flies by In fact, even with a solid ending, I wanted

    30. A fascinating look at racial relations in Mississippi from the fifties to present A beautiful narrative that tells of the interaction between two families, one white and one black Strong female characters dominate the story and their struggles are quite believable S.J Francis has written a remarkable story showing how people and relationships evolve.
