    1. I ve read quite a number of the fill in books published for the Chalet School series, and approached this one with some trepidation Not that the preceding books were bad, far from it they were mostly competent, very faithful tributes to what any long time fan would love in the Chalet series But to write a book set before the entire series How can anyone hope to fashion anything sensible and fitting to match the characters developed over sixty books, no less by Elinor M Brent Dyer over 70 years a [...]

    2. If I had to pick one Chalet fill in for Desert Island Books although I assume the rules have changed and all the fill ins count as part of the Complete Works of EBD well, anyway, this is the one I d pick You can tell it s not written by EBD herself only because it s too good it has a plot, for a start, and it doesn t contradict itself at all But the characters are EBD s, and they dance off the page just as EBD s characters do when she s writing at her best. There s lots of Madge lovely, merry, wo [...]

    3. Surprisingly adept prequel to the beloved Chalet School series Barber manages to capture the flavor of Brent Dyer s books, and gives us some much needed background Why did Madge regard Joey as delicate in the first few Chalet School books, when to the reader she seems healthy and vivacious, even bumptious sometimes What qualified Madge to become a competent headmistress What was the connection with Mademoiselle What life experiences made Grizel Cochrane the troublesome girl she is in the first b [...]

    4. Frankly, I thought this was lovely It was a real tribute to Elinor Brent Dyer s characters and world, obviously written by someone who knows it well and loves it Joey and Madge are beautifully drawn and their relationship with Grizel, Mademoiselle and others is not only believable but highly enjoyable to read.

    5. One of the best fill ins for the series Barber is given room to breathe than most fill in authors, as the Bettany s life before the Chalet School has so few set points Madge really shines here, as we see her take on responsibilities that show she will become the capable businesswoman and headmistress fans know and love Highly recommended.

    6. Fantastic book, normally writres continuing another authors series dont quite manage to hit the right tone or get details mixed up but this was great everything slotted into place nicely for continuity in the rest of the books and the style of writing was very similar to Brent Dyers
